Construction began in 1961; the doors opened in the fall of 1965. The school took its name from Charles F. Kettering, the engineer whose electric starter changed the automobile — a fitting patron for a school built to serve the east side's auto families. To its students it was never "Charles F. Kettering Senior High School." It was The Big KE, home of the Kettering Pioneers, the Sweet Blue and White, where the motto was "Go Hard or Go Home." The 14-foot concrete K out front became the school's landmark — and it outlived the school. It stands today at the corner of Van Dyke and Hendrie, preserved when everything behind it came down. Kettering's later history followed the arc of Detroit Public Schools itself. A 1978 addition brought a 1,200-seat performing arts auditorium, dedicated in 1981 to Leonard Sain, one of Michigan's pioneering Black educators. But by 2012, enrollment had collapsed to a fraction of the building's 2,100-student capacity, and the district cited more than $5 million in needed roof, window, and HVAC repairs when it announced the closure that February. Kettering graduated its last class in June 2012. Then came the long abandonment: twelve years of scrappers, broken glass, and weather moving through hallways where the ancestral face murals still watched the lockers. In 2019 the property sold to a parts supplier, which opened a factory on the former athletic fields in 2022 while the school itself kept standing.
